Holding On
Holding On
'Holding On' is a piece that explores human connection, dependency, vulnerability, intimacy and belonging. I wanted to capture the fragile, momentary nature of our relationships that reflect a deeper, everlasting spiritual love.
Although imperfect, we seek to heal and fulfil those we love most. The textural, underpainting alludes to these imperfections and brokenness. The deep wounds that make us who we are also allow us to love and care for others.
Tomorrow is never promised and I wanted these figures to embody that sense of 'drinking one another in', savouring the moment and committing it to eternal memory.
I also wanted to capture a fear of loss with this work. They are holding on tightly as if survival depended on it; desperately clutching at the certain impermanence. I used layers of glazing to achieve a transparency that would embody this need to grasp and hold something so precious lest it slip away.
The figures embrace one another protectively, creating a safe, secure space for the other. Their limbs entwine, wrap and intersect as if they have become one, reflecting my understanding of belonging: to be fully known and fully loved.
While the subject of this piece is human, earthly relationships and the brokenness that they are borne from, I wanted to capture the idea that love and belonging are eternal concepts that transcend this lifetime. The figures emerge from darkness, glowing and formed. Their imperfections are fading and there is purpose and meaning in their love. They are contributing to something greater.
